INTRODUCTION

About

INTRODUCTION I’m so happy you’re here and honored you’ve chosen me to guide you on your family’s journey with hearing loss. I’m Dr. Michelle Hu - A pediatric audiologist with 12 years of experience, a mother of three young children, and I also have hearing loss myself.

Imagine if you...

MY QUESTIONS FOR YOU
  • Finally felt confident, empowered, and prepared in parenting your child with hearing loss.
  • Knew how to find emotional support throughout this journey.
  • Were backed by a team of professionals who have helped thousands of children thrive in life.
  • Understood the purpose of audiology testing and to correctly prepare for these appointments.
  • Knew how to best prepare yourself, your family, and your child for the road ahead.

This course I created is the first of its kind, built by a pediatric audiologist (and hard of hearing adult) for the parents and children navigating this new journey.

In just eight short modules I’ll provide answers to all the questions and concerns you have now–and those that might come up down the road. I’ll help you process fear and grief, learn what team members you need to support your child, give you insight on how to navigate school, explore necessary lifestyle changes, and more.

THE COMPLETE COURSE

If every parent was armed with this knowledge, I know they would go into appointments prepared with information (about their child that would help us help them) and walk out having received the best answers and care they were seeking for their child.

The person
behind
the course

Hi there! I’m Dr. Michelle Hu and I am a pediatric audiologist. I grew up with hearing loss and utilize bilateral cochlear implants. I love working with children and adults with hearing loss but I feel especially equipped to work with parents.

My hearing loss was progressive and I was found to have a bilateral profound hearing loss by the time I was 10 years old. Fast forward to the end of college, I was in what felt like my millionth doctor’s appointment when my mom mentioned to me I’d be a great audiologist. Little did she know that her suggestion would be the catalyst for my 12+ year career in pediatric audiology.

I have helped thousands of nervous, loving parents just like you navigate this new journey with support and care. But my clinical practice only allowed me to support a finite amount of parents and children per week. I wanted to  positively impact more people, so this course was born (around the same time as my third child!).

Thank you for being here. I’m honored to have the opportunity to support you and your child. It's my life’s work to make this journey as beautiful as it can be for your family.

PART ONE

My Child Has Hearing Loss Now What?

The first half of the program looks to provide information about what to expect in the first year post-diagnosis.

MODULE 1

Acknowledging and Processing Your Emotions

The time post diagnosis can be an overwhelming time. In this module we’ll talk about grief, and about how to move forward after receiving a diagnosis.

This module also includes a bonus interview with my mom, Pauline. She shares about her experience processing her emotions surrounding diagnosis and raising me.

MODULE 2

Choosing an Audiologist and Understanding Testing

It takes a village. Here, we discuss how to build your medical team, beginning with your audiologist. We’ll talk about what an audiologist does, why it’s important to choose one who really works for you, and I’ll tell you a little bit more about audiological testing.

MODULE 3

Hearing Amplification: Understanding Your Child's Options

Here we’ll talk about different options for amplification (AKA technology) that can give your child access to more sounds if that is what you and your family desire. There are so many options out there and it can be overwhelming! I break down some of the common options for you but also let you know that this is a key time in working together with your audiologist as a team rooting for your child.

MODULE 4

Reframing Hearing Loss: From Fear to Opportunity

Let's talk about mindset. The way you think about your child’s hearing loss will have a huge effect on how they think about it. It’s time to let go of your fears about what your child might miss out on in life, and start thinking about all the opportunities they’ll have to succeed.

PART TWO

Life with Hearing loss

The second half of the program looks beyond the first year, and provides some insights on how to support your child, yourself, and your family, as you all grow along your hearing loss journey.

Module 5

It’s Your Choice: Family Lifestyle & Communication

When you have a child with hearing loss, you automatically become a family with hearing loss. In this module we’re going to discuss some of the lifestyle choices you’ll need to make as a family, and how to go about making them.

Module 6

Supporting Yourself as a Caregiver

Being a parent to a child with hearing loss means you have an extra layer of things to think about and manage.  In this module we’re going to take a step back and talk about how you can make sure you’re supporting yourself, so that you’re able to be there for your child.

Module 7

Empowering Your Child to Succeed

Here we focus on how to empower your child to find their own way, to become their own advocates and to succeed in the world when you’re not around.

Module 8

Growing Up - Navigating School with Hearing loss

Starting school can be scary! For many parents it’s the first time your child has to get on without you. This section is full of tips about how to set your child up for success in school, so that you can rest assured they have all the tools and support they need.

Client Stories

Dr. Michelle has been part of our family’s audiological team for almost a decade. We were already a couple of years into our hearing loss journey when we met her, and I can’t stress enough how much she positively impacted my children. As I worked through this course all I could think about was how much I needed this all those years ago (when my oldest son was first diagnosed)! Everything that felt so overwhelming is clearly and lovingly distilled throughout the course materials!! I am so grateful to know Michelle personally and I’m beyond thrilled for other families like ours to now have access to her wisdom, compassion and inspiration! This course is such a gift to parents of children with hearing loss!!

I've known Michelle for about 5 years now. She was the first audiologist we met when we discovered my then infant daughter was eligible for cochlear implants. I will never forget our first appointment with her when she gave Vivian her hearing aids. I didn't know she was deaf herself and when she shared that with us and that she also had cochlear implants I instantly felt a connection with her that I knew I couldn't feel with a hearing audiologist. She was so open and honest and willing to share her experience. She even lifted up her hair and showed us her cochlear implants. I had never seen one before at that time. That special moment is one that will always stick out in my memory. Since that time I have always felt comfortable going to Michelle with cochlear implant related questions not only for her professional experience but personal experience as a CI user herself. For example, I recall asking her once when my daughter was younger why she didn't like the sound of the hand dryer in a public restroom. I can truly go to her with anything CI related and there is no better resource! She is very knowledgeable and I think her personal experience only boosts her professional knowledge.

Janell Graves San Diego, California

Ironically, Michelle and I connected because we are both military spouses. What I learned next, though, bonded us. She’s not only an amazing advocate for kids and families who are navigating hearing loss (I have two teens who are hard of hearing) but she also has hearing loss and utilizes cochlear implants. Her unique perspective is not only insightful for me as a parent, speaker, and author. It’s also an invaluable view that has helped me to better understand my kids and some of what they may experience as teens who use hearing technology. She’s a solid and trusted voice and I’m grateful to have the opportunity to collaborate with her and exchange ideas in both personal and professional settings.

Valli Gideons, founder/blogger at My Battle Call and children’s book author San Clemente, California

I am so thankful to have met Dr. Michelle and to have experienced her "Mama Hu Hears: Your Child Has Hearing Loss, Now What?" course! I am a parent of a hard of hearing child. My daughter was diagnosed with hearing loss at the age of 6 weeks old. She is 21 months old now and is thriving! Early in her journey, it was so difficult not knowing what she is experiencing or what her journey would look like in the future. However, through Dr. Michelle's amazing content and program, I feel so much more empowered and educated on the things my daughter may be experiencing. Thank you, Dr. Michelle for this amazing program! You are an invaluable resource and I am so appreciate of all the knowledge and supportive you've given me. Thank you!Dr. Michelle is very professional, but is also very relatable and personal. She has made me feel so much more educated and confident going into my daughter’s appointments.

Not only is Dr. Michelle an invaluable resource, she personally has become an amazing friend. Thank you for all you have taught me, Dr. Michelle!

Testimonials

As a hard of hearing mom, with hard of hearing kids - it’s so hard to find someone who “gets it.” Michelle has been an amazing resource for me. Because she is also hard of hearing, she understands some things that I can’t explain in words. When we talk about my hard of hearing kids, she is able to speak from both an audiology perspective to give me valuable information, as well as understanding where I am coming from as a parent. I really appreciate the straightforward and to the point discussions we have, and then I feel more comfortable and empowered in my decisions moving forward.

Janna Cowper Dana Point, California

I was implanted with my first cochlear implant in 2019 and soon after was in touch with Michelle. She not only answered all of my technical questions, but she also became one of my most cherished supporters and advocators. It was an emotional process for me, and when I was met with obstacles Michelle took the time to listen one on one and always offered sage advice. It’s so important to find a community and I’m grateful that Michelle has been part of mine since almost day one. I can say without a doubt she is a valuable resource in the HOH and deaf community.

Carissa Dewey South Abington, Pennsylvania

Michelle is a thorough and knowledgeable audiologist, who serves as a wonderful resource for both professionals and parents. I find that her personal experience as a member of the Deaf community enhances her skills as an audiologist. As a speech-language pathologist, I have learned a lot about recommendations for devices, ways to counsel families, and general information that is helpful. She has served as a safe space to ask questions without judgement. I’ve highly recommended my families reach out to Michelle as she is authentic and open about her experience and professional  expertise.

Sydney Bassard, The Listening SLP Chesapeake, Virginia

I had the pleasure of interviewing Michelle for a job in San Diego in 2009. I  knew immediately Michelle had a skill set unlike any other applicant or clinician. She has first hand knowledge of what it is like to grow up with hearing loss. She has personal experience with hearing aids and cochlear implants.

Michelle has developed a comprehensive set of materials that will serve as tools and support for parents with children diagnosed with hearing loss.

This resource/program covers topics such as how to prepare for your child’s audiology appointment, navigating the emotional roller coaster, choosing devices, and how to become a well informed advocate for your family. Michelle has created an invaluable product compiled by years of personal experience, over a decade of on-the-job work experience, and interviews with experts.

FAQ

How long is it?

- Eight main videos approximately 10-20 minutes per module with supplemental materials but not necessary to utilize - Additional thirteen bonus interviews with experts in the field related to hearing loss and hearing healthcare.

Will you tell me what to do?

I offer guidance and resources. My goal is for you to take away what works for you. I really love to honor that each child and family is different. What works for some may not work for others. Disclaimer: Program content is not medical advice, rather for educational and informational purposes only. It is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment provided by your healthcare provider(s). Do not disregard professional medical advice or delay in seeking professional medical treatment based on the information in the videos.

I am not ready to buy but want to learn from you. What other options do I have?

You can follow me on Instagram @mama.hu.hears

Is this only for parents or grandparents too?

No - this program is great for mentors, teachers, students etc.

Will you cover different ages and stages?

Absolutely! This program covers from every stage from identification (which can be as young as a few days old) through school aged children.

Can the course be gifted?

Absolutely - there's a gift card option available!

Is it worth the price?

My heart and my feedback/test group say absolutely. Imagine 10+ years of appointments with an entire hearing health care team and village wrapped up into one package and textbook. Bottom line - I created this program to save you time, stress and energy that you would otherwise spend on research and worry!

How long will it take me to complete?

Since you get everything for life - go at your own pace. I actually recommend this because it can be a lot to process and you won't be ready for some topics just yet (such as navigating school if your child is very young). Bottom line - I created this program to save you time, stress and energy that you would otherwise spend on research and worry!

Is this covered by insurance?

Not at this time; however that's one of my next big goals. I see this as one of the best ways to reach all pediatric populations.

How long have you been practicing?

- I will have been practicing as a pediatric audiologist for twelve years as of Fall 2021

Is the course captioned?

Yes! In both English and Spanish!

Will I get access instantly?

To the video and modules and the bonus interviews YES! The handbook will be shipped within 14 days.

Are there payment plan options?

Unfortunately, not at this time.

Do you talk about sign language as an option?

Absolutely. My job is to provide resources and information for you so YOU can make the choices that best fit YOUR family.

How can this address each of our children if everyone's hearing loss is different?

I do not address your specific hearing loss. The common thread that I've seen with DHH parents/family is how you feel and what information you have to go about your journey. This program provides the information, experiences (not just my own) and tools to enable you - you can do this!

Can this course be used for Professional Development Hours (PDHs)?

YES! We will be able to provide a course outline, learner objectives and a certificate of completion once the course modules have been marked as complete. Log these 8 Professional Development Hours (PDHs) using the appropriate avenues with your governing agency. Please contact [email protected] for further information. Hold onto/ keep record of the certificate you receive for completing our course. We do not keep records of these for you.
