Introduction

I’m Dr. Michelle Hu - A pediatric audiologist with over 12 years clinical experience, a mother of three young children, and I grew up hard of hearing myself. I’m so happy you’re here and honored you have chosen to invest in learning how to best support families on their deaf/hard of hearing journey.

The person
behind
the course

Hi there! I’m Dr. Michelle Hu and I am a pediatric audiologist. I grew up with hearing loss and have utilized bilateral cochlear implants since I was college-aged. I love working with children and adults with hearing loss, but I feel especially equipped to work with parents, families and professionals that love and support them.

My hearing loss was progressive, and I was found to have bilateral profound hearing loss by the time I was 10 years old. Fast forward to the end of college, I was in what felt like my millionth doctor’s appointment when my mom mentioned I’d be a great audiologist. That idea was the launching pad for my 12+ year career in pediatric audiology.

I have helped thousands of nervous, loving parents navigate their new journey with support and care. But in my clinical practice, I couldn’t positively impact the amount of parents and children I wanted to. This course affords me the ability to reach more families, support more parents, and educate professionals in a way a clinical practice could not.

Thank you for being here. I’m honored you’ve found me and it’s my life’s work to make this journey as beautiful as it can be for each parent, child, and supportive professional in the Deaf/Hard of Hearing Community.

PART ONE

My Child Has Hearing Loss Now What?

The first half of the program looks to provide information about what parents can expect in the first year post-diagnosis.

MODULE 1

Acknowledging and Processing Your Emotions

-The period of time post- hearing diagnosis can be overwhelming. In this module we’ll talk about grief and about how to move forward after receiving a diagnosis.

-This module also includes a bonus interview with my mom, Pauline. She shares about her experience processing her emotions surrounding diagnosis and raising me.

MODULE 2

Choosing an Audiologist and Understanding Testing

It takes a village. Here, we discuss how to build your patient’s/family’s medical team, beginning with the audiologist. We’ll talk about what an audiologist does, why it’s important to choose one who really works for them, and I’ll explain  more about audiological testing in layman terms.

MODULE 3

Hearing Amplification: Understanding Your Child's Options

This module is all about options for amplification (AKA technology) that can give children access to more sounds if it’s what the parents and families desire. There are so many options out there and it can be overwhelming! I break down some of the common options in easy to understand terms while encouraging collaboration with their audiologist.

MODULE 4

Reframing Hearing Loss: From Fear to Opportunity

Mindset. The way parents think about their child’s hearing loss will have a huge effect on how the child thinks about it. I’ll give you insight on how to help parents let go of their fears about what their child might miss out on in life, and start thinking about all the opportunities they’ll have to succeed.

PART TWO

Life with Hearing loss

The second half of the program looks beyond the first year, and provides insights on how  to support the child, the parent/caretaker, and the family, as they all grow along their hearing loss journey.

Module 5

Itā€™s Your Choice: Family Lifestyle & Communication

When parents have a child with hearing loss, they automatically become a family with hearing loss. In this module, we’re going to discuss some of the lifestyle choices they’ll need to make as a family, and how to go about making them.

Module 6

Supporting Yourself as a Caregiver

Being a parent to a child with hearing loss means they have an extra layer of decisions. In this module we’re going to take a step back and talk about how parents can make sure they’re supporting themselves, so they can best support their child.

Module 7

Empowering Your Child to Succeed

Here we focus on how to empower their child to find their own way, to become their own advocates, and how to succeed in the world when the parent is not around.

Module 8

Growing Up - Navigating School with Hearing loss

Starting school can be scary! For many parents it’s the first time their child has to navigate life without them. This section is full of tips about how to set the child up for success in school, so that parents can rest assured they have all the tools and support they need.

testimonials

Michelle is a thorough and knowledgeable audiologist, who serves as a wonderful resource for both professionals and parents. I find that her personal experience as a member of the Deaf community enhances her skills as an audiologist. As a speech-language pathologist, I have learned a lot about recommendations for devices, ways to counsel families, and general information that is helpful. She has served as a safe space to ask questions without judgement. I’ve highly recommended my families reach out to Michelle as she is authentic and open about her experience and professional  expertise.

She has first hand knowledge of what it is like to grow up with hearing loss. She has personal experience with hearing aids and cochlear implants.

Michelle has developed a comprehensive set of materials that will serve as tools and support for parents with children diagnosed with hearing loss.

This resource/program covers topics such as how to prepare for your child’s audiology appointment, navigating the emotional roller coaster, choosing devices, and how to become a well informed advocate for your family. Michelle has created an invaluable product compiled by years of personal experience, over a decade of on-the-job work experience, and interviews with experts.

FAQ

How long is it?

- Eight main videos approximately 10-20 minutes per module with supplemental materials but not necessary to utilize - Additional thirteen bonus interviews with experts in the field related to hearing loss and hearing healthcare.

Will you tell me what to do?

I offer guidance and resources. My goal is for you to take away what works for you. I really love to honor that each child and family is different. What works for some may not work for others. Disclaimer: Program content is not medical advice, rather for educational and informational purposes only. It is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment provided by your healthcare provider(s). Do not disregard professional medical advice or delay in seeking professional medical treatment based on the information in the videos.

I am not ready to buy but want to learn from you. What other options do I have?

You can follow me on Instagram @mama.hu.hears

Is this only for parents or grandparents too?

No - this program is great for mentors, teachers, students etc.

Will you cover different ages and stages?

Absolutely! This program covers from every stage from identification (which can be as young as a few days old) through school aged children.

Can the course be gifted?

Absolutely - there's a gift card option available!

Is it worth the price?

My heart and my feedback/test group say absolutely. Imagine 10+ years of appointments with an entire hearing health care team and village wrapped up into one package and textbook. Bottom line - I created this program to save you time, stress and energy that you would otherwise spend on research and worry!

How long will it take me to complete?

Since you get everything for life - go at your own pace. I actually recommend this because it can be a lot to process and you won't be ready for some topics just yet (such as navigating school if your child is very young). Bottom line - I created this program to save you time, stress and energy that you would otherwise spend on research and worry!

Is this covered by insurance?

Not at this time; however that's one of my next big goals. I see this as one of the best ways to reach all pediatric populations.

How long have you been practicing?

- I will have been practicing as a pediatric audiologist for twelve years as of Fall 2021

Is the course captioned?

Yes! In both English and Spanish!

Will I get access instantly?

To the video and modules and the bonus interviews YES! The handbook will be shipped within 14 days.

Are there payment plan options?

Unfortunately, not at this time.

Do you talk about sign language as an option?

Absolutely. My job is to provide resources and information for you so YOU can make the choices that best fit YOUR family.

How can this address each of our children if everyone's hearing loss is different?

I do not address your specific hearing loss. The common thread that I've seen with DHH parents/family is how you feel and what information you have to go about your journey. This program provides the information, experiences (not just my own) and tools to enable you - you can do this!

Can this course be used for Professional Development Hours (PDHs)?

YES! We will be able to provide a course outline, learner objectives and a certificate of completion once the course modules have been marked as complete. Log these 8 Professional Development Hours (PDHs) using the appropriate avenues with your governing agency. Please contact [email protected] for further information. Hold onto/ keep record of the certificate you receive for completing our course. We do not keep records of these for you.
